Industrial DataMatrix Generator
DataMatrix is the tiny 2D code you find marked directly onto things that have no room for a label at all — a circuit board, a surgical instrument, an engine component. It is the standard of choice in aerospace, automotive, and pharmaceuticals.
Small space, serious data
A DataMatrix square can hold a serial number, a lot number, and an expiry date in an area only a couple of millimetres across, which is why it is so often laser-etched straight onto metal — a technique called Direct Part Marking. Its Reed–Solomon error correction (the ECC 200 variant, the only one worth using today) keeps it readable even when the surface is scratched or the etch is shallow, and the code reads at any rotation.
If you buy medicine in Europe, you have already used one: the EU Falsified Medicines Directive puts a GS1 DataMatrix with serial number and expiry date on virtually every prescription pack, and the US FDA's UDI system does the equivalent for medical devices.

Printing notes
DataMatrix goes smaller than any other symbology, but only if each module stays crisp: at 2–3 mm total size you are printing modules a few printer dots wide, which is 600 DPI territory on thermal printers. The solid L-shaped finder edge must stay unbroken — a nick in that corner hurts more than damage anywhere else in the symbol.

DataMatrix or QR — which should I pick?
For consumer scanning, QR: every phone camera app reads it natively, while DataMatrix support is patchy. For industrial marking below about 1 cm, DataMatrix: it needs less quiet zone and stays readable at smaller physical sizes. The full comparison is in DataMatrix vs QR codes.
Can a phone read a DataMatrix?
Sometimes — many camera apps now decode it, but reliability varies by platform and app. If the audience is the general public, use QR; if it is warehouse or production staff with imaging scanners, DataMatrix is fine.
What is a GS1 DataMatrix?
The same symbol carrying GS1-structured data (GTIN, expiry, batch, serial) with a leading FNC1 — the pharmaceutical standard. Structure matters as much as the symbol: a scanner at a hospital expects those Application Identifiers. See healthcare barcode standards.
